A College Students Social Media Use Diary

Tracking My Social Media Use: A Personal Social Media Use Diary

A study of an ASU Student

As a college student, I often find myself mindlessly scrolling through social media for hours on end. I realized that I needed to get a better understanding of my own social media habits, so I decided to record a personal social media use diary for one day.

Monday:

  • 8:00 am Woke up and checked Instagram and Snapchat while still in bed

  • 9:00 am Used Twitter to catch up on news during breakfast

  • 10:00 Checked LinkedIn while getting ready for class

  • 10:30 Used Instagram to post on my companies account

  • 11:00 Used Snapchat to keep in touch with friends

  • 11:30 Apple Music while waiting for friends to arrive for a night out

  • 4:30 Used Paira to search for locally owned businesses for lunch

  • 7:30 NBC for Sunday Night Football

  • Social media use to just checking for updates and responding to messages before bed

After tracking my media use for one day, I was shocked to see just how much time I spend on these platforms. While social media can be a great way to stay connected with friends and family, it's important to remember to use it mindfully and not let it consume too much of our time. This personal social media use diary has helped me to become more aware of my own habits and to make a conscious effort to reduce my time on social media. The most credible media sources mentioned above probably goes to Paira and Linkd-in. Paira will only show you what you are interested in and doesn't have ads which is cool.
